THE BASICS

FOMC — the Fed’s interest-rate decision

The Federal Open Market Committee is the group that sets U.S. monetary policy. FOMC is a meeting and a decision, not an inflation number. Its comments about future rates also matter.

Rates rise, or the Fed signals higher rates for longer

Bitcoin & crypto: More expensive borrowing and better returns on cash can make risky crypto investments less appealing.

Gold: Gold pays no interest. Higher returns on bonds after inflation and a stronger dollar can put pressure on its price.

Rates fall, or the Fed signals lower rates ahead

Bitcoin & crypto: Cheaper borrowing can encourage risk-taking and support crypto if confidence in the economy holds up.

Gold: Lower returns on interest-paying assets and a weaker dollar can make gold more attractive.

What this can mean for your pocket

New mortgages, some business loans and credit-card debt may become more or less expensive. Savings rates can move too. Existing fixed-rate loans usually keep their agreed rate.

Why it can go the other way: A cut made because the economy is deteriorating can scare investors and hurt crypto. An expected hike may barely move prices. Other countries’ policies also affect the dollar.

What to check: Compare the decision with expectations. Read the statement and press conference together, including why rates changed or stayed the same.

Compare with expectationsA number can rise from last month and still be lower than investors expected. Check both comparisons. Without a reliable expectations source, we cannot call the result a surprise. Slower inflation usually means prices rise more slowly, not that prices fall.

Conditional paths to evaluate

More restrictive than expected

What to observe: A higher path for rates or a more restrictive communication can tighten financial conditions.

Possible mechanism: Rates, the dollar and real yields may reprice together; risk assets can be more sensitive to the size and speed of the surprise than to the meeting label.

Options and checks

  • Wait for the statement and press conference to be read together.
  • Stage exposure only if the price response confirms the thesis.
  • Keep a written invalidation level and position-size limit.

What would weaken this interpretation: The statement, projections and market reaction point in different directions or liquidity is too thin.

Close to the expected path

What to observe: An in-line decision can reduce one source of uncertainty, but it does not guarantee a directional move.

Possible mechanism: Markets may focus on guidance, growth language, balance-sheet policy or the next data release.

Options and checks

  • Hold existing risk within the user’s plan.
  • Compare the decision with the prior path before changing exposure.
  • Avoid treating a calm first reaction as confirmation.

What would weaken this interpretation: The press conference materially changes the expected path.

More accommodative than expected

What to observe: A lower path or easier communication can loosen conditions, but growth concerns can offset the initial response.

Possible mechanism: The same announcement can support risk assets through lower rates or hurt them if it signals deteriorating growth.

Options and checks

  • Wait for rates, dollar and risk assets to confirm the same mechanism.
  • Use a staged decision instead of an all-at-once trade.
  • Record what would make the thesis wrong.

What would weaken this interpretation: The move is driven by a growth scare or reverses after the full communication.

Buying, waiting or staging exposure

ChoicePotential benefitTradeoff
Buy before the releaseExposure if the intended move starts immediately. An adverse surprise, price gap or reversal can cause a loss.
Wait for the releaseMore information and less exposure to the first surprise.A move may be missed or the later entry may be less attractive.
Stage exposureSpread the timing of the decision.Partial exposure can still lose value; multiple trades add costs.
Stay uninvestedKeep capital available for another opportunity.Forego participation if the asset rises.

Decide how long you plan to invest, how much you can afford to lose, and what would make you change your mind. The final decision remains yours.
